Description

While I was working on Sargeforce's latest side mission, I was struck by the urge to animate Half Pint's climb.

There are tons of things that irk me about how this turned out (particularly how big HP ended up) but I am proud of Half Pint's timing/motion.

Consider this a late Christmas present, Aaron!

I lied; I wrote this in Notepad, not Word. With that out of the way, disclaimer; I have animated sprites in the past, so I speak without much knowledge of how things work, or how difficult they are. Nonetheless.

Let's do this bit by bit; first thing that catches the eye (other than Galeforce) are the snowflakes. With the violet background, I'm not too sure why they're there other than the original deviation holding a Christmas theme; I notice you use the background color for a lot of your deviations so I can accept it for such, but, again, snowflakes. My thought is that they're indoors and there are snowflakes? I think a different background color to add to the 'outside' feeling (unless indoor snowflakes were what you were intending) could have helped a bit. Maybe even a darker purple, but with Galeforce's blacks, not sure how that could/would have worked. Anyway.

Gale's profile looks a bit short compared to how tall you usually draw her face, and how it ends up when she turns to see who's climbing up on her. There's a few other parts I could nitpick on - her hand looks a little strange, and that'd be a fun lopsided wheel to roll on - but they're nitpicks. With the simplified style you have here, they're easily forgivable IMHO.

Half Pint herself is animated beautifully - there's a couple nitpicks I'll get into, but for the most part I love how you made the sense of motion. It's very natural, and I'm honestly wondering what you used for reference. But nitpick I would get into, and nitpick I SHALL.

First off - her hand rising seems to be the same frame, at least until she grabs the wheel; just, well, said frame raised. With the rest of the animation, it strikes me as somewhat odd. Second, when she's grabbed the upper tire and managed to pull herself up, she bows her head forwards; spatially speaking, I'm not sure where the head goes. Do the tires stick out that much/is it just me? Because otherwise I'm thinking that she would have banged her head on Gale by then. Speaking of which, while from what I know of Gale I could easily see her just B| and not moving through the whole stint - her arm not moving with the way Half Pint makes her seem, well, not so much an actual robot there as a flat piece, with only the tires themselves being three-dimensional. Maybe if Gale raised her arm a bit it'd be different, but either way I hope that makes sense.

Final nitpick - at the end, you have HP's lines wavering. This in itself is not bad - however. With HP's line's moving and Gale's statics, it highlights the differences between them in what I think is a bad way. Again - Half Pint and the wheels three dimensional, Galeforce being...not so much. If you had Gale's lines wavering throughout the whole piece I think it'd tie them together a lot better, or remove said wavering from HP.

That said, this does what I expect from any art piece - it gets the message across, and it gets it across well. Not much of a message there, but I think you set out what you meant to accomplish (or at least what I'm guessing you wanted to accomplish), and the quality is far better than I could have done. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w…" width="15" height="15" alt=";)" title=";) (Wink)" />
